Library Dr. Seuss party filled with fun activities

Many Green River residents gathered at the Sweetwater County Library Saturday to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday.

As soon as children entered the building they received a Read Across America sticker. The party was hosted as a way to kick off Read Across America Day, which took place Monday, Dr. Seuss's birthday. Read Across America Day is an annual reading awareness campaign sponsored by the National Education Association.

During the Super Saturday party at the library, children were encouraged to pick out snacks prior to sitting down and watching a few short Dr. Seuss movies. Children with cups full of Goldfish, chocolate animal crackers, popcorn and fruit loops then made their ways into the multipurpose room where they watched "Dr. Seuss on the Loose." The movie contained three short films based on the stories "The Sneetchers," "The Zax" and "Green Eggs and Ham." In "The Sneetchers" children learned how silly people can be about being different and not accepting others as they are. In "The Zax" they learned just how stubborn two Zax were; and in "Green Eggs and Ham" they learned how sometimes if a person tries something different they may just like it.

Once the short films were over, children made their way through a maze of sorts, which was constructed out of cardboard to a table. Here, children made cat faces out of a wooden stick, construction paper and a puff ball. After their cat face was made, they had the chance to meet the cat in the hat, one of Dr. Seuss's well-known characters. They were not only greeted by the cat in the hat, but they received a small notepad shaped like a book from him.

Children then made their way to one more craft station, where they colored a picture of Thing 1 and Thing 2 and then created a box for them to pop out of.

Some children had enough fun by then, but others were happy to color a picture of Dr. Seuss' hat, which was put up on the wall. Other children picked out library books or DVDs before leaving. The next Super Saturday party will focus on Legos and will take place March 14 from 1-3 p.m. at the library.
