Green River track fares well

The Green River High School indoor track team faced off against some strong competition last week at the annual Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho.

Wolves head coach Steve Boyd was pleased with the way his team performed at what is considered the premier high school indoor track meet.

“A lot of kids had season bests. It was a good meet,” he said.

Green River had several athletes who just missed out on a spot in the finals.

Junior Tyler Vendetti finished just out of the top 12 in the long jump.

Boyd said to qualify for the finals that Vendetti had to have a jump at least 20’ 9”. He said Vendetti had a jump over 21’, but he barely scratched on it.

He said that Vendetti has the potential to win the event at the state tournament.

Green River senior Shawn McGuire just missed out of being one of 27 finalist in the 800 meters. He finished the prelims in 29th place.

Boyd said that senior standout Holly Huber had the second best jump among Wyoming participants in the 60-meter hurdles. He said with a strong field including the best from Wyoming, that is often times how they judge how they performed.

He added Kayleigh Allison dropped eight seconds in the 800-meters which is really good.

This week the team will travel to compete at the University of Wyoming.

“We’re just going to go out there and have fun,” Boyd said.
