Boys basketball looks to start strong

After a rough start last Friday at Star Valley, the Green River High School boy’s basketball team is looking to get out of the gates quicker Thursday evening against Sheridan.

A quick start by the Braves put the Wolves in an early hole in the 58-40 loss.

Head coach Dan LaRose said the team had a game plan for the Star Valley game, but his team came out flat.

LaRose said it was a long bus ride and wait for the game, but there comes a time you have to say that the game is going to start and you have to be physically and mentally ready to play.

He said in the first quarter, the Wolves were a step or step and half behind and this created some easy baskets for Star Valley.

After the rough start he said the team played equal for the rest of the game, it was just not enough to overcome the early deficit.

Senior Kyle Goglio led Green River with 13 points. Junior Kamden Carroll added nine and senior Hayden Love had eight points and six rebounds.

On the bus ride home, LaRose said the coaching staff talked about what they could to better prepare the team for the start of the game. He said they devised a pre-game plan that will allow them to get some work in before the game to get the blood flowing and get the team ready to play.

LaRose said they introduced it to the team Monday to better prepare them for the start.

After five games, he said the teams has had good quarters and halves against some top notch competition, but he thinks they may have it in the back of their minds that something is going to happen to turn the game south.

LaRose said developing mental strength is difficult and it is not something that can be done in practice -- it comes from playing games and seeing if the team can push further.

CHEYENNE INVITE

Starting Thursday, Green River will play three games in three days at the Cheyenne Invite.

The Wolves (0-5) will open tomorrow at 5 p.m. against Sheridan (3-2).

LaRose said the Broncs are a talented team that is going to put up a lot of shots and will try to take advantage of numbers in the transition game.

He said they are averaging 20 three-point shots a game and 30 two-point shots.

With Sheridan having put up 100 three-point shots in five games, LaRose said they will have to defend the arc, but will also have to help out defensively on the rive.

Green River is scheduled to play host team Cheyenne South (3-3) Friday at 8 p.m. and Cheyenne Central (4-3) Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
