Rex O. Dulaney

Rex O. Dulaney, 88, of Rock Springs passed away Dec. 9, 2014 in Sandy, Utah.

He was born May 26, 1926 in Winfield, Kan.  the son of Cordy and Merle Dulaney.

Dulaney attended schools in Winfield, Kan. and graduated from Winfield High School.  He enlisted in the United States Navy in May of 1942. He served in the South Pacific. He was a member of Legionare No. 10  in Winfield, Kan. When he returned to the states, he graduated from Southwestern College and married Darlene Heffron Aug. 27, 1950. His love of water and sports began as a lifeguard at the community pool in his home town. Dulaney made his way to Rock Springs in 1962  working in the oil field, after moving his family west, living in Worland and Rangley, Colo.  

He loved the outdoors and worked many odd jobs to stay in Rock Springs until he secured a position in the Rock Springs School District.  He worked as a teacher for 23 years. Dulaney coached swimming and football at the junior high and high school levels.  He spent more than 40 years refereeing everything from church league basketball to Wyoming State Swimming meets and was inducted into the Wyoming Officials Hall of Fame for recognition of his years of service.  He loved the outdoors and spent time hunting and fishing and many years scuba diving. He was a member of the Sweetwater County Dive Team. He was a devoted fan of the Dulaney sports family for more than fifty years, never missing a meet, a match or a game. Dulaney tinkered happily throughout retirement and attended Western Wyoming Community College and dabbled in jewelry making, but found a great fondness in pottery and his fellow classmates. He excelled at joke and storytelling.

He is survived by his wife E. Darlene Dulaney of Rock Springs; two sons, Stewart O. Dulaney and wife Susan and Todd O. Dulaney, all of Rock Springs; one daughter, Jane O. Dulaney of Hawaii; two grandchildren, Dane O. Dulaney of Grand Junction, Colo. and Shea O. Dulaney of Salt Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his parents Cordy and Merle Dulaney and one sister Betty Dulaney Tholen.

Following cremation, memorial services  and military honors will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 1515 Edgar Street, in Rock Springs. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
