Villa residents Jerry Kallas, Leta Andrews and Pauline Bonuchi were ready to take money donations for baked goods during the open house and rummage and baked-goods sale at Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center.
Turnout was better than expected at The Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center's open house, rummage and bake sale last week.
During the busy hours of the event, people had to wait to pass each other in the hallway. At times, the hallways seemed packed with residents looking at baked goods or rummage-sale items. The CRRC made a total of $2,400.
Volunteers and CRRC employees Dana Martinez and Dave Osborn were happy to help residents find what they needed at the rummage sale.
"This is my job and this is about our residents," Martinez said. "Anything we can do to make it better for them is important. So to come and volunteer on my own time off is worth it."
Osborn said he was excited to show residents the facility's renovations and how clean the center is. A lot of visitors did walk around the facility to see what changes were made.
"We're just really proud of this facility," Martinez said. "We have really incredible people who work here."
So were the residents in attendance. They took ownership over the event by taking money for baked goods and talking with the visitors.
CRRC Activities Director Annie Walk said the attendance, which seemed steady throughout the two-day event, was more than she expected.
Walk said the fundraising event went over well and all of the proceeds will be put to good use. The center's resident council will decide what to purchase with the money. So far, the council has talked about purchasing new furniture or bingo game items.
As for the leftover rummage-sale items, those will be donated.
"We're not throwing it out," she said.
Walk said she heard the Green River High School band is hosting a garage sale and is needing items for its sale. Anything the band doesn't want, will be donated to local thrift stores.
The amount of donations the center received was also more than Walk anticipated.
"We had way more donations than we expected," Walk said. "People are very generous so we are lucky."
The rummage and bake sale were not the only items for sale, a cookbook created by Villa residents was also available for purchase.
Donations for a project called dolls for dollies were also accepted. Walk said in this project enough dolls were raised for each resident to receive one. Women will receive dolls and men will receive electronic games or hats.
