Despite tough field, cross country team posts solid second week

Last Saturday was a great opportunity for the Green River High School cross country team.

Not only did the team face a challenging course at the Cardinal Classic in Soda Springs, Idaho, they also faced some top teams from around the Mountain West.

The Green River boy’s team finished 14th out of 24 teams. In total their were a 162 runners in the varsity race.

It was was once again a tight grouping of five varsity five runners with Austin Waters leading the way with a 71st place finish and a time of 18:54.07.

He was followed less a second later by Braden Reichl with a time of 18:54.52. Shawn McGuire finished 79th with a time of 19:02, Brayden Kovick was 94th with a time of 19:28 and Curtis Westenskow was 102 with a final time of 19:34.

Head coach Steve Boyd said it is nice to have that nice tight grouping, but once again stressed the importance of the dropping times.

The Lady Wolves were once again paced by a strong performance by junior Josie Givens who finished seventh out of 145 runners with a time of 20:15.

Nicole Davis finished 61st with a time of 22:35, Cassandra Newcomb was 66th with a time of 22:45, Sarah Joyner end the race in 8th place with a time of 23:13 and Cheyenne McMichael finished with a time of 23:14.

Boyd said Givens is really running well right now, but the teams really needs to get the second to fifth runners time closer to her. He said in Idaho it was a three minutes, but he would like no more than two.

Overall, he said he was happy with the performance at what he call a very big and competitive meet.

“Things are coming along and we are making some progress,” he said.

Boyd was also pleased with some of the younger runners on the team.

He said Newcomb, a freshman, has established herself as the third varsity position for the Lady Wolves.

“She’s really coming along. She is going to be good,” he said.

Along with Newcomb, he said freshman Greg Vanderpool, Kaleigh Allison, Caleb Nathan and Milfes Moffat who competed in the junior varsity race, all dropped time from the previous week.

The team will travel Saturday to compete at the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah.
