Coming home: Green River hosts Rawlins

After several weeks of fall camp and two straight weeks on the road, the Green River High School football team will finally make their first home appearance of the year Friday night against Rawlins.

The Wolves will be looking to pickup their first win of the season at the game set to begin at 7 p.m. at Wolves Stadium.

Green River (0-1) dropped its opening game of the season 38-6 last Friday at Riverton.

Head coach Don Maggi said after a road scrimmage two weeks ago against Douglas and the game in Riverton, his team is excited to be playing at home where there is good fan support and an outstanding field.

Looking back at the season opener, Maggi said the team did do some good things and there were positives they can build upon.

Offensively, Green River was led by junior quarterback Tyler Vendetti who was 19 of 34 for 209 yards.

After trailing 38-0, the Wolves finally found the scoreboard at the 7:09 mark of the fourth quarter when Vendetti hooked up with Tanner Trumble for Green River's first score of the 2014 season.

It was a huge day for the senior receiver who finished with 12 receptions for 131 yards and the touchdown.

James Bunderman was the leading rusher for Green River with 13 rushes for 57 yards. The Wolves had a total of 123 yards on the ground.

Maggi said the team needs to generate some more yards on the ground.

"We were inconsistent at best," he said.

During the game against Riverton, he said they had a couple positive runs, but could not get several in a row and they need to do this to set up the play action pass.

Maggi said in Wyoming football you can't just dink and dunk your way down the field, you have to be able to run the ball and also stop the run.

The fourth-year Green River coach has watched film of Rawlins (1-0) and said they will have to do a good job of line up correctly on defense when the Outlaws have three or four receivers in the spread, but will also have to do a good job stopping what he called a very good starting running back.

"We need to make sure we control him," he said.
