Western Wyoming Community College hosted the Percy Hadley Welding Contest on April 12 and three Green River students took the top spots. The Percy Hadley Welding Contest is an annual high-school welding competition hosted by Western. Each high school in Western’s service area is allowed three senior competitors. Katie James, a 2015 Green River High School graduate, who is currently studying at the University of Wyoming, was named the Outstanding Physical Education Major of the Year by the Division of Kinesiology and Health. Thanks to a local group, many organizations received monetary donations. The St. John’s Episcopal Thrift Shop committee recently met to determine which organizations would receive money the shop raised by selling clothing and other items. Tata Chemicals hosted a successful diaper drive for United Way of Southwest Wyoming Community Diaper Bank. During the Diaper Drive, 1,049 diapers and $2,500 in funds were donated by employees of Tata Chemicals and United Steelworkers Local 15320. As a generous gesture, Tata Chemicals matched employee contributions to bring the total to $5,000 collected. A Green River High School sophomore is trying to raise money to pay for a service dog to help her manage her Type 1 diabetes. "I was diagnosed Oct. 5, 2017, with Type 1 diabetes," Mya Tollefson said. "My pancreas was attacked by my body and not working, so I have to take insulin." For 10 single mothers, it was an evening to show family members and the community how important the Climb Wyoming program is to them. One city resident’s work at clearing snow and ice along a portion of Flaming Gorge Way was recently recognized by the Green River City Council. Once again, the Golden Hour Senior Center is participating in the Care for Critters program. According to a press release, the Care for Critters program helps seniors pay for food, vaccines and other items for their pets through donations, as well as funding from AARP Wyoming.
