  • Our View: Legislative races more important

    Oct 12, 2016

With elections around the corner, many eyes are focused on the contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. However, more important races are taking place across the state, with more direct consequences tied to the victors. In the many campaigns for seats in the Wyoming Legislature, voters have a lot to consider when they walk into their voting booths. With a slumping energy economy, voters are tasked with deciding if they want representation who want to open the state’s Legislative Stabilization Reserve Fund to help state agencies, as w...

  • Wyoming should question Liz Cheney's intentions for Wyo.

    David Martin, Editor|Oct 12, 2016

Wyoming voters will have a tough choice on their ballots Nov. 8 when deciding if they want Liz Cheney or Ryan Greene to represent the state in Washington, D.C. Cheney, who came out ahead of a nine-person field for the Republican nomination in August, has certainly poised herself to make a strong push during the last month of the campaign, having generated more than $1.4 million in donations. One question voters should ask themselves is if Cheney is more interested in speaking for Wyoming, as...

  • Notes from Town Square: The role of the youth league official

Kevin Sadler, Parks and Recreation Dept.|Oct 12, 2016

What’s even tougher than being a youth sports coach or parent? The answer is being a youth sports referee or umpire. The youth sports official has one of the most demanding and essential roles in youth sports. It is obvious that the youth sports official is responsible for enforcing the rules of the game, but what else is the official responsible for? A good ref or umpire should check to see if a child is injured on a play, make sure players and coaches practice good sportsmanship, encourage players that may be having a rough time, try to make...

Lu Sweet, Western Wyoming Community College|Oct 12, 2016

A couple of weeks ago, I read an article by tennis great, Serena Williams titled “Leadership Lessons.” (Coach, September/October 2016) In it, Serena talked about four traits she tries to live by in order to be the best tennis player she can be. I share this with you, because these traits are not only good reminders for effective living, at work, at home, when you deal with others and how you carry yourself. First, Serena says that people need to take the “long-term view”. She says that for her life is more than just tennis, which is her job. I...

  • Wolves takes first loss in Afton

    David Martin, Editor|Oct 12, 2016

The Wolves' undefeated streak ended in Afton Friday night, falling to the Braves 20-7. In a rematch of the 3A State Championship last year, the Wolves responded to the Braves' physical play style, with the Wolves defense stopping a number of plays that gave them trouble during the championship game. Despite that strong effort, the Wolves still struggled in its special teams plays, with short punts giving the Braves great field position at the start of their possessions. The Braves were able to...

  • WWCC mascot change was a good idea

    David Martin, Editor|Oct 12, 2016

Mascots are a silly concept and it’s even sillier how much people can associate with them. An often cartoonish character, and just as often presented in a very masculine depiction, they’re often the representation of a group or region, though in some cases, they just don’t make a lot of sense. Take the Rock Springs tigers for example. A city founded on coal and mining, the high school’s mascot is a tiger, an animal common to much of Asia. While attending RSHS, I never put much thought into the h...

Surrounded by her students, Jackson Elementary School Principal Stacey Court waited for the inevitable. The students, armed with cans of silly string, let her have it. In a few short moments, Court was covered in webs of neon colored sting.
