  • Fire Chief remembers 9/11

    David Martin, Editor|Sep 10, 2014

The terrorist attacks on New York and Washington D.C. Sept. 11, 2001 left an impact on many people throughout the county. One of the people those events impacted is Mike Kennedy, Green River’s fire chief. Kennedy said it seems odd that there are people who don’t remember what happened 13 years ago, citing an article he read about how the event is taught in history classes. For Kennedy, the memory of where he was is as clear as his memory of where he was at when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. At the time of the attacks, Kennedy ser...

  • Our view: Depot takes step in right direction

    Sep 10, 2014

Last week, the Green River City Council voted to return a $1 million grant to the Wyoming Business Council which would have been used to renovate the U.P. Depot building. While this isn’t the first time the city voted to return renovation grant funds and could probably sour the city’s relationship with the WBC in regards to future grant requests, this is the best course of action for the city to take. One of the major problems with the grant was its requirement for a 66 percent match, which would essentially mean the city would need to pay $2...

  • Letter: Discussing the 9/11 flag

    Sep 10, 2014

Dear Editor, This letter is directed to Jenna Whitcher. Two weeks ago, you attacked Councilman Mark Peterson about a flag that hangs in our yard. Well, what you forgot there is a second person that lives in that house, Mark Peterson’s wife. Her name is Debbie Peterson. Before you start writing a letter, I ask that you get your facts straight. That 9/11 flag is mine. Shortly after 9/11, I bought a flag and I had Mark put the 9/11 flag where it still hangs now. It has been there 13 years and no one until you have written anything about that 9...

  • Learn football at the library

Lindsey Travis, Sweetwater County Library System|Sep 10, 2014

OK, I’ll admit it. I’m not well versed in the sport of football. But it’s hard not to get into the spirit of the game this time of the year. I like the community spirit that comes along with football games and the lessons of teamwork that the sport teaches. I also enjoy how families and friends come together to support their teams. So, to go along with football season, and since it is Homecoming week here in Green River, I’m going to talk a little bit about football as it relates to libraries. What, you don’t think they’re related? Well, they a...

  • Views change through the years

    David Martin, Editor|Sep 10, 2014

It’s interesting to see how opinions and thoughts tend to shift as the years pass by. While I’ll certainly admit that I haven’t been a working journalist as long as some of my colleagues at the Green River Star, I’ve been practicing long enough to see a few ideological shifts first hand. One of the more noticeable shifts involves the Sweetwater County Commissioners’ view on overseeing the county’s board-managed organizations. At one time, during Commissioner Wally Johnson’s first term in offic...

  • Acting like its 1995 19 years later

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 10, 2014

I really would love to have one day where we could act like it’s 1995. I really don’t think it would be to much to ask, for that at least one day a week or possibly month, we could put our phones down, stay of the computers and actually have conversations with each other. Every time I go somewhere like a restaurant, most of the people sitting together just sit there and play on their phones. A lot of times I think they are just texting each other, which really makes me want to scream. Let...
