  • Our view: Upholding the cowboy code

    Jul 18, 2018

The University of Wyoming wasn’t likely expecting the criticism it received when it unveiled its new marketing slogan “The World Needs More Cowboys.” The critical comments are coming from some faculty members who claim the slogan isn’t inclusive and supports a stereotypical image of a white man in blue jeans and wearing a cowboy hat. The university claims the slogan will be used with images that don’t associate with the commonly held image of the cowboy. We think it’s fair to let the university move forward with its slogan and their plans for u...

  • Playing with Power: A bout with the world champion

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 18, 2018

“Now you’re playing with power.” I remembered the cheesy slogan from an old Nintendo Entertainment System commercial back from the mid-1980s when I found and bought one of Nintendo’s NES Classic Editions recently. Sure, video games look much better and shinier than they did 30-plus years ago, but I have fond memories sprawled out on the living room floor playing “Super Mario Bros.” and “Donkey Kong.” Decades later, these games still put a smile on my face. As I make my way through the sys...

  • Cold vs. mediation: no one wins

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jul 18, 2018

I’m not sure what’s worse -- a cold or the medicine to treat the cold. It’s bad enough to have gotten a summer cold, but for me it’s always tough trying to decide whether or not to suffer it out or give in a take some medication. If I don’t take the medication, I have to deal with the constant head pounding, sneezing, sore throat, coughing and overall ickiness I feel when I get a cold. However, if I take the medication, then I feel as though I am watching my own life pass me by in slow moti...

Mike Lambert, Wyoming Small Business Development Center Network|Jul 18, 2018

Imagine this. Your phone rings and a pleasant voice starts talking to you about your recent visit to your favorite restaurant. You reply, and a conversation follows. The voice responds and you are convinced that you are speaking with a person… but you aren’t! Instead you are speaking to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program that is so advanced that you can’t tell if it’s a live person. Science fiction? Not anymore. Recently Google demonstrated Google Duplex. This appointment program has passed the famed Turing Test for AI, which requires that...

  • Lodging tax nearly dies Tues.

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jul 18, 2018

In an unexpected move by the Sweetwater County Commissioners, the commissioners almost defeated the lodging tax initiative by not acting at all. Initially when the resolution was reviewed, chairman Reid West asked for a motion twice, no one would make a motion and the resolution died because the commission failed to act on it. However, after a short recess and realizing the initiative would die and not be placed on the general election ballot if they failed to act on a resolution, the...
