  • Fewer 'recapture' districts spell trouble for school funding

    Dustin Bleizeffer, Wyofile.com|Jul 15, 2021

For the first time in decades, Campbell County will not send excess revenue to the state’s School Foundation Program, the primary statewide school fund. The county’s shift from a “recapture” to an “entitlement” district reveals changing economic dynamics among state communities. It also underscores the risk inherent in Wyoming’s reliance on mineral extraction to provide equitable and adequate funding for each district, no matter its local economic health. “I think it says a lot about the state of Wyoming,” Wyoming Education Association’s Govern...

CASPER — The University of Wyoming on Tuesday proposed sweeping changes at the institution, including budget cuts that would lay off 75 positions — some tenured, a reorganization of a slew of academic departments, and the formation of a school of computing — among other additions. The proposal must be approved by the university’s board of trustees, which meets all this week in Torrington. If approved, it would still require a formal public review for 120 days, a process mandated by the university’s regulation 2-13. Trustees are expected...

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 15, 2021

Wednesday evening, amongst the stalls of vendors hawking produce and merchandise at the Green River Farmer’s Market, volunteers from Golden Hour Senior Center hosted their weekly bake sale. The center’s wares are always popular amongst shoppers and within half an hour, a bountiful collection of baked goods was reduced to a few packages of handmade Rice Krispies Treats and a couple of loafs of bread. It wouldn’t take long for them to sell out completely. Jackie Grubb, director of the cente...

  • Our View: Tax is a needed

    Jul 15, 2021

We are well aware the idea of any tax isn’t popular and we understand why. Any sales tax represents a few more dollars out of our pockets that would otherwise go to groceries, gas or the monthly streaming bill. However, we don’t see any other way out of another 1% sales tax. It is either that or no ambulance service. Ambulance funding has long been an issue for the county, with the Sweetwater County Commissioners opting not to continue paying subsidies for the service. This comes from declining revenue that has forced budget cuts thr...

  • Susan Gore, where's the beef?

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 15, 2021

“Have you ever heard of a wish sandwich? She refers to articles published by the New York Times and Wyofile.com as a “nothingburger,” saying it is all a disinf...
