  • GR splash park remains busy

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jul 5, 2018

The Green River Splash Park was a busy place Monday morning. With temperatures already in the upper 70s, several families brought their children to the Splash Park to cool off. Some children were running through the splash park, while others decided the splash park just wasn't enough and proceeded to fill water balloons and water guns to either throw or spray at each other. When the children would get cold, they would run and play on the playground equipment at Evers Park, which is only several...

  • The firefighters' longest night

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 5, 2018

It was a scene not unlike any other Independence Day celebration. Grilled meats and soft drinks available to all. Children playing while the adults enjoyed a chance to chat. However, the purpose behind the gathering is what set it apart from every other Fourth of July festivity in Green River. They were firefighters and their families waiting for the inevitable call. The gathering is a tradition for the Green River Fire Department. As residents celebrate congressional approval of the...

  • Our View:The people behind the newspaper

    Jul 5, 2018

There are real people behind the publication of this newspaper. The shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Maryland which left five staff members dead is an all too sobering reminder of that fact. Five people, all of whom were someone’s neighbors, friends, family members and coworkers, were murdered because of the work they do. The response from Chase Cook, a Capital Gazette reporter posting reports to social media from the scene wouldn’t surprise anyone who has spent time working in news. “I can tell you this: WE are putting out a damn...

    Jul 5, 2018

Dear Editor, An open letter to the bicyclists using the Greenbelt pathways: Would you please, PLEASE, give some kind of alert, vocal or bell, as you approach those of us who walk. I am so tired of being startled out of my skin when suddenly being passed by someone who has come up silently from behind. My heart can only take so much of this. Carol Aldinger Green River...

  • My first fireworks show

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jul 5, 2018

Every once in a while, a memory from my childhood comes back to me vividly. Sometimes it doesn’t even have anything to do with what I’m doing, but the memory floods in and I can’t help but relive it. Sometimes the memories are good and other times they are bad, but they’re my memories just the same. This past week, as I was thinking about the Fourth of July fireworks my family will see, when a memory came back to me. It was when I saw my first big fireworks show. I was probably in element...

  • Is your household prepared?

Amanda Cavaz, Green River Communications Administrator|Jul 5, 2018

I was recently at a FEMA led Emergency Preparedness training. The class was less boring than it sounds and really got me thinking. Not just about being prepared at a government and city level, which is what I was there for, but on a personal level. How does an entire city stay in a state of preparedness for an emergency? While there are plans, practice, contact lists, mutual aid agreements, and more across the pillars of city and county government the real preparedness is in the household of every citizen in the form of an emergency kit and a f...
