  • Our View:Rolling out the red carpet

    May 29, 2019

While the weather may not look it, the summer tourism week starts with Quilting on the Green this weekend and the Overland Stage Stampede Rodeo next weekend. Tourism is an important part of Sweetwater County’s economy. While mineral extraction plays a central role in the economic makeup, tourism remains an important pillar supporting jobs and businesses in the county. With people coming to the area to either enjoy local festivities, world-class fishing or a simple meal while passing through to another destination, we think it’s important for Gr...

  • Summer homecoming

    Lexi Mitchell, Intern|May 29, 2019

This summer, I, Lexi Mitchell, will intern at the Green River Star. As a communication major at the University of Wyoming, I jumped at the chance to return to the town I spent 10 years of my life residing. While I grew up a little south of Green River in Vernal, Utah, I spent my summers on my grandparents’ ranch in McKinnon. This led to my love of Wyoming and relocating to Green River after graduating high school. I have deep family connections in the community and have held several jobs in the area, most notably at Arctic Circle, where I w...

  • Recalling graduations past

    Stephanie Thompson, Editor|May 29, 2019

As I attended numerous graduations last week, I couldn’t help but notice how each one is unique in its own way. For example: Black Butte High School in Rock Springs allows each graduate to pick who they want to hand them their diploma. Some select their parents or a sibling, while others chose their favorite teacher. It truly is one of the most emotional ceremonies I’ve attended. Another example is how graduates at Farson-Eden High School pass out flowers to every person who they felt imp...

  • $10,000 a hard pill for Council

    David Martin, Publisher|May 29, 2019

While the Green River City Council approved its tentative budget unanimously last week, one proposed expenditure is the cause for some unease with Council members. A $10,000 expenditure to the Muley Fanatics Foundation, a locally-operated wildlife conservation group, is included in the city’s list of proposed community service grants. These grants help fund organizations and services provided by Golden Hour Senior Center, Flaming Gorge Days, the county drug treatment court and Climb Wyoming, a...

  • Airport terminal not funded

    Stephanie Thompson, Editor|May 29, 2019

The Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport did not receive funding from the Federal Aviation Administration for its commercial airport terminal upgrades. “To say we are disappointed, would be an understatement,” Airport Director Devon Brubaker said. However, Brubaker knew there was a lot of strong competition with 2,652 applications totaling $10.9 billion for airport projects. The funding available for this round was $779 million. “According to our discussions with the FAA, our application was w...

However, the notice does not involve the quality of drinking water from the water treatment facility. At the time of the JPWB’s meeting, staff at the facility hadn’t had a chance to review the findings, though JPWB Chairman John Eddins said the findings were items the board was aware of and working to correct. “We got hit w...
