  • Purchase could impact county

    David Martin, Publisher|Feb 26, 2020

A historic land purchase Wyoming’s top officials are interested in pursuing could involve nearly 1,000 square miles of surface land in Sweetwater County. Last week, Gov. Mark Gordon announced the state was interested in buying land and mineral rights throughout southern Wyoming from Occidental Petroleum, which had acquired the land through its 2019 purchase of Anadarko Petroleum. The land was originally granted to the Union Pacific Railroad during construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, c...

  • House votes to keep Wyo. out of youth survey

Seth Klamann, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Feb 26, 2020

CHEYENNE — The Wyoming House killed an amendment last week that would’ve brought the Equality State back into a national survey that asks middle and high schoolers questions about their health and behavior. The state is one of only four that don’t participate in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, which asks middle and high school students to answer 49 and 89 questions, respectively. The data is then used to identify trends and inform public health decisions on a local, state and nationa...

  • Legislators seek to regulate internet

Nick Reynolds, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Feb 26, 2020

CHEYENNE — Wyoming may be a frontier state, but it sure loves its fences. More than a century ago, Wyoming built its stock with fences, its forebears reining in the wild, open spaces with apportioned grazing lands and property lines all neatly demarcated within the otherwise craggy and rugged state’s clean, rectangular border. But as the state enters a new frontier — with eyes toward conquering emerging marketplaces in technology — can Wyoming’s current leadership similarly rein in the borderless expanses of the internet? Is it feasible...

  • Our View: Cutting tourism spending is not a hot idea

    Feb 26, 2020

Last week, Sen. This amendment would later be withdrawn by the senator as others quickly defended the importance of state-funded tourism promotion. In an email to the Star, James said the cuts would save millions in taxpayer funding and called the state department of tourism a “black hole of taxpayer dollars,” believing the department to be a subsidy for the...

  • Concerns continue for Greater Little Mountain Area's future

    Josh Coursey, Muley Fanatic Foundation|Feb 26, 2020

It has been well documented and met with zero opposition to the priority and significance of maintaining the Greater Little Mountain Area (GLMA) and its bountiful recreational resources. That being said, I am incredibly concerned about the future of the GLMA, southwest Wyoming’s crown jewel and one of its most important recreational areas in the region. The Department of the Interior has repeatedly shown in recent months that it refuses to listen to local input when deciding how to manage the nation’s public lands, a trend that could con...
