  • Our View: New events should be considered

    Jan 14, 2015

While deep snow and frigid weather hasn’t been a huge problem for the residents of Green River, the winter season still gives some sun worshipers a case of cabin fever. While thinking about the fun in the sun awaiting us in the new year, we started to think about local events that could be a fun diversion if someone were to host them. We’ve written about this one before, but we believe a day commemorating trona and its importance to the community would be a great way to spend an afternoon at the Mining Memorial Park near the Green River Vis...

The expansion of Medicaid Is part of that law and was intended to extend affordable health insurance to low income, single adults who do not have health insurance now. Our Wyoming Health Department was tasked with coming up with an acceptable Medicaid expansion solution. The SHARE program, which they have proposed, is a workable...

  • College shouldn't be free

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Jan 14, 2015

I’m not a morning person. I arrive to work around 8 a.m. and before I get going with work and making phone calls, I always like to spend a few minutes looking at other newspapers and catching up on sports from the night before. This is usually the relaxing point of my day, but I also use this as an opportunity to come up with ideas for things to write about and this was the case today. I came across an article today about President Obama and his idea about giving people two free years of communi...

  • Why not learn something new

Lindsey Travis, Sweetwater County Library System|Jan 14, 2015

This year I’m taking the plunge and going back to school to get my master’s degree. I graduated from college back in the late 90s, so it’s been a while since I actually had to study, write research papers or take tests. It will take me a few years to earn my degree, so I’m making quite the time commitment. Thankfully, with modern technology I can get my master’s degree without ever stepping foot in a classroom. It’s amazing how much things have changed since I was in college. I know that going back to school is not for everyone. The cost associ...

  • The Tooth Fairy's first visit

    Stephanie Thompson, P|Jan 14, 2015

Just like that it was gone; and an old tradition continues. About a month ago, I took my 5-year-old son Matthew to the dentist for his six-month checkup. During that appointment, the dental hygienist noticed he had a few loose teeth. Of course, I panicked I had been working hard to keep those in his mouth. I thought something was wrong. You see, in the summer, Matthew was running in our unfinished backyard when he tripped and fell on a rock. He took a direct hit to the mouth and one of his teeth...

  • Jigging techniques for ice fishing

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Jan 14, 2015

I like catching and releasing a lot of fish and the trout I catch average 15-22 inches. I like to stay in between 10 and 20 feet of water with a few drop offs in between. Structure is a big part of it. If I find this depth of water with drop offs on the inside turn of a point, and going into a small bay, all the better. This is the type of area to find feeding fish as they cruise by looking for a meal, and a point is where you will find me fish 65 percent of the time. Good times for catching trout on clear ice with lots of light and oxygen are...
