This past Friday at the Wolves' Homecoming varsity football game, Green River played host to the number one team in 3A, the undefeated perennial power Cody Broncs. Cody is dominating the state statistics in virtually all areas - offense, defense and special teams. The Green River High School Girls and Boys Tennis teams competed with 16 other teams at the Wyoming High School State Tennis Championships in Gillette this past Monday and Tuesday. The more experienced girls team finished in 10th place while the boys were 13th in the16-team field. The Wolves took the long bus ride to Powell this past week to take on the number three team in 3A, the perennial powerhouse Powell Panthers. Powell had outscored their opponents 189-31 to achieve their 4-0 record prior to their game with Green River. The Panthers had a number of players ranked high in a number of categories, both offensively and defensively. On a beautiful late summer evening this past week, the Green River Wolves, with a record of 1-2, took on the visiting Worland Warriors with a similar 1-2 record. The special night was also the "Hall of Fame Game." There was a huge crowd on hand for the celebration and to watch the Wolves and the Warriors. This past week the Wolves Boys and Girls Tennis teams traveled to Cheyenne to compete in the 3A South Regionals on Friday and Saturday, September 15-16. The more experienced, older girls team finished fourth out of the seven teams competing, while the young boys team was sixth out of eight teams. Fresh off a first-game victory over Lander, the Green River Wolves hit the road for their second game of the season, taking on the Rawlins Outlaws this past Friday night. This past week the Green River Wolves hit the road to take on 3A rival the Lander Tigers in their conference opener for the 2023 season. The teams have a lot of similarities, including having new head coaches, both of whom have experience coaching 3A football. This past week the Wolves Tennis team was on the road with mixed results. On Thursday, August 31 they traveled to Rawlins. The girls beat the Lady Outlaws 3-2. The Lady Wolves’ #1 and #2 Singles players and #1 Doubles team all won their matches, while the #2 and #3 Doubles teams lost. A new era in Green River Football started with arrival of new Head Coach Blaine Christensen and an almost completely new group of mostly younger assistant coaches. Many of the assistant coaches played football for and graduated from Green River High School and then went on to play, and in one case coach, college football. The Green River High School Boys and Girls Tennis teams' season got underway Monday, August 8 with the start of practice under veteran Head Coach Phil Harder. The varsity teams will have fourteen regular season matches against their Wyoming rivals, with six of the matches being home games and eight away games. The Wolves Girls and Boys Track and Field teams competed in the Wyoming High School Track Championships this past weekend at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper. They were up against 13 other 4A schools, almost all of which have significantly larger enrollments. While the Wolves Girls and Boys Track and Field teams were scheduled for a track meet in Cheyenne this past week, road closures put a damper on those plans. However, Green River and several other teams were able to secure entry into the D & D Track Invitational in Worland. The Green River Girls Wrestling team competed in the first-ever Wyoming Girls State Championships this past Thursday and Friday, February 23 and 24, in Casper at the Wyoming Ford Center. There were 30 teams competing, and the Lady Wolves finished in the top half of the state with a 13th-place finish.
