  • Delicious and easy JELLO fruit salad

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Jun 22, 2016

I've helped my mom cook for years, mainly acting as her sous-chef. One of my first memories of helping my mom in the kitchen is when we made our very first batch of JELLO fruit salad. A coworker gave her the recipe and my mom adjusted it to her liking. We made it the night before Thanksgiving, just before bed. We received several complements from our family the next day and since then, we've made it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Over the years, I started making it on my own and it has...

Van Matre has been a commissioner for six years and he enjoys his work with his co-commissioners, which is one of the several reasons he is seeking re-election. “You have to be able to trust the people you work with and we have that right now. That doesn’t happen overnight, you have to work at it,” Van Matre said. He is confident in the current commission’s ability to take on the difficult budget decisions the cou...

  • Summer heat may bring brush fires

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Jun 8, 2016

Summer is approaching, but with the rise in temperatures comes a rise in possible fire danger. Fires need fuel to start and spread, and with the moisture the area has received recently, the plant life has had great opportunity to grow. “It depends on how much water we get and how much brush grows,” Green River Interim Fire Chief Mike Liberty said. “The plants dry out with wind and heat, so if there’s no moisture, there’s an increase in danger.” “We’ve gotten a little bit of moisture, so we’re good right now, but that could change, and it pr...

  • Ain't no mountain high enough?

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Aug 12, 2015

Every summer since 2009, my uncle, dad, brother and I go on a hike, and every summer I wonder why I let my family drag me up these godforsaken mountains. My first trip was to the Wind River Range. The goal was to hike up Fremont Peak. I did not achieve that goal. Instead I got a minor case of altitude sickness and had to sit just below the peak with my dad while my uncle and brother finished the summit. This was the same trip where my sleeping bag’s zipper broke which caused long, cold nights, and the cooker didn’t work very well so we end...

They remember a few flash floods and also times when the river was a little too high for comfort, but nothing very serious. Nothing like Rock Springs experienced last week. Carol Lowe said every now and then the Green Belt gets flooded and also Jamestown on occasion. “There really isn’t much flooding, especially since Fontenelle was built,” Carol said. “Although there was a time in the early 8...

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Jul 8, 2015

We just kept dropping and dropping and dropping until we were 1,600 feet into the Earth. Tuesday, fellow reporter Lillian Palmer and I went into the TATA Chemicals Green River Facility. In reality, the ride in the shaft lasted about two and a half minutes, but it felt much longer. I could feel the change of pressure in my head and my ears were popping. Adrenaline was running through my body. I was a little nervous, but mainly I was excited for what I was about to experience. We rode down with some miners and it was just another day for them....

  • May showers bring summer fires

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Jun 24, 2015

The spring rain is a cause for fires in the dry summer heat. Thanks to a rainy May, the area is very green with a lot of moisture. Although the rain is great for vegetation growth, when all of those plants dry up in the summer sun, they act as fuel for fires. “When it’s cool and raining, vegetation grows, I’d hate to say it, but like wildfire,” Green River Assistant Fire Chief Mike Liberty said. When it’s hot and dry, the plants that have grown start to dry out and makes it easier to start fires. When the vegetation dries out, fires spread qu...

  • Strike while the iron is hot

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Jun 10, 2015

“Rain or shine, we’re branding,” is what my grandpa told my mom on the phone last Wednesday night. Every year my family brands cattle at my grandparents’ and great uncle’s ranch. This year we weren’t sure if the weather would cooperate, but we were on a mission, and luckily, Mother Nature was kind to us. My earliest memories of branding are sitting in the back of a pickup truck, pinching my nose closed to avoid the smell. Anyone who has branded before knows it isn’t the most pleasant scent, and if you haven’t branded before, you can imagine. Oh...
