Seniors enjoy the fair

Residents from both Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center and Sage View Care Center were at the fair Thursday taking in the sights.

With help from the Green River Wolf Pack Dance team, CRRC residents made their way through the fair with ease.

Heidi Schuh, CRRC activities director and volunteer coordinator, said with a total of 19 residents from the center and The Villa, they were taking all the help they could get.

"We have a lot of kid volunteers this year, which is awesome," Schuh said.

Those attending were treated to chicken salad sandwiches, watermelon chips and a fair dessert. Like other fair goers, the residents couldn't resist the funnel cakes. Others tried cheesecake on a stick or strawberries dipped in chocolate.

Schuh said this year the residents arrived at the fair later than prior years because a lot of them got too tired before the afternoon band started to play. Listening to the bands is one of the activities the residents' love to attend, but that's not the only place they enjoy.

"The petting zoo is always a hit," Schuh said.

Resident after resident took turns petting the animals, while others splurged and bought oats to feed to the animals waiting for the tasty treat.

Schuh said for most residents, the fair is one of the biggest highlights of the year. Most of them kept telling her they couldn't wait for fair day and when it came they were overly excited.

A couple of the female residents even arranged for their hair stylists to do their hair for them before they went to the fair.

For 98-year-old Donnette Peterson, the quilts was what she wanted to see.

"I made a lot of baby quilts," she said. "I can't do anything now."

Peterson said she can no longer make quilts, but she still appreciates the work of those who can.
