Changes happening at GRPD

You may have noticed some changes at the Green River Police Department. Not only do we have some new faces, but we have a new look as well.

In the last year we have had five officers retire. We appointed a new chief, Tom Jarvie. Two captains were promoted, Shaun Sturlaugson and Janet Kauchich. Promoted to sergeants were Brad Halter, Jesse Nielson, Joe Cronk, and Det. Rob Fischer. Three new corporals were also promoted: Jason Bomba, Gary Bach, and Arner Smart.

The GRPD still had spots to fill, and we were lucky enough to have brought in four new officers. Kevin Lennon Jr. and Kolter Murphy who just graduated from the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy; Gary Frey, a former Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Deputy, and our most recent addition, Trevor Kirkwood, also a former deputy. Both bring their law enforcement experience and knowledge to the GRPD family.

With new officers coming on and needing new uniforms and equipment, we started the process of updating our uniforms. We are still rocking the navy blue, just in a new way.

We decided to purchase new outer vest carriers that offer benefits to our officers. These new carriers are designed to help distribute the weight of the body armor better, as well as some of the equipment the officers need to carry. These vests also keep the officers cooler when wearing them and give them the option of removing the outer vest when needed. In addition to the comfort benefits the vests give the officers better location placement for required equipment. Body cameras can be placed on the vest, instead of having to be attached to the officers shirts, giving a more secure placement. Additionally the vests have removable name plates and badges so they could be repurposed if needed.

Our new shirts are less expensive and can be worn in more applications since the body cameras are not attached. The new pants are tan and are less expensive than their counterparts we have ordered in the past.

We were able to purchase new uniforms within our current budget allowance so no other funds were needed.

Our goal in this transition was keeping our officers safe and being fiscally smart.

Our community is important to us, and we would like to invite the community to our Pre-Night Out Open House event at the GRPD, Saturday from 1-3 p.m. We would love to have you come meet our department and check out our new look.

We have had community support in our efforts in putting this open house together. Many local businesses and organizations have pitched in to help us put this event together. We hope to see you all there.

It’s a great opportunity to meet the men and women who protect our community. We believe in strong community-police relationships as it takes a community to protect a community.
