County swimmers take state title

Swimmers from the Sweetwater Aquatics Team earned a state championship earlier this year.

The swimmers competed at the 2018 winter championships representing both Green River and Rock Springs. The team was formed when the the swim clubs in both towns unified.

"It was fantastic to win the winter championships," head coach-west Randy Walker said. "We are very proud of all our athletes, parents, coaches, and the great example the program has set about the amazing things that can happen with the communities of Rock Springs and Green River work together."

The team ended Gillette's 17-year winning streak, with 59 athletes earning a total of 3,297.5 points. Several athletes also earned one or more individual state titles. The team recently celebrated with an end of season banquet, where athletes received their awards from State. Additional awards given were:

Horizon Award, Lilly Munoz

Swim of the Year Award, Hailey Uhrig

High Point Award, Abi Kim Robinson

Corner Stone Swimmer of the Year, Michael Richmond

Randy Walker Award, Ron DeFauw

Perseverance Award, James Spicer

Walker and coach Ron DeFauw personally thanked the following seniors for being a part of the team. Ron DeFauw and James Spicer, who both will attend and swim for Morningside College; Avery Otto-Horn, who will attend and swim for University of Wyoming; Tanner Miller who will be attending the Coastguard Acadamy; Ty Sturlaugson, Logan Johnson and Ethan Moffat.
