Green River’s track team has a state champion after the final meet of the year.
Green River traveled to Kelly Walsh High School in Casper with 18 qualifiers, eight girls and 10 boys, to compete in the 2018 Wyoming State Outdoor Track Championships and came away with some fine performances..
Junior high jumper Erika Wilson was the lone champion as she cleared the bar at 5’4.” Senior thrower Natasha Young came through with a second-place performance to gain All State honors with a throw of 120’07” in the discus. She placed ninth in the shot put, just one inch off her personal best, with a throw of 37’1.”
Other top performances were Sophomore Mariyah Brady finishing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and junior David Martinez taking fourth in the boys’ discus. Brady also took 13th in the long jump with a leap of 14’11.75.”
Senior Kyle Cacho had a good meet as he took 11th in the long jump at 21’01,” fifth in the 400-meters with a personal best time of 51.27 and took 12th in the 100-meter dash.
Fellow senior Christian Gaytan ran well, as he set a personal record in the 800 meters, taking ninth with a time of 2:01.12. Senior thrower Nick Boldt took ninth in the discus.
For the Lady Wolves, senior Lauren Hoyt also set a personal best with a 15th place finish in he 100 meters with a time of 13.54. Junior Kaisa Arnell took 11th place in the 3,200-meter run, while freshman Liberty Ferrell took a second and a half off her personal best to finish 13th in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.95.
Finally, in the relays, the girls’ team of Brady, Hoyt, freshman Chatney Tirrell, and freshman Jacque Vaquera improved their season’s best time to take eighth place in the 4x100-meter relay.
The boys had two different relay teams qualify, with senior Brayden Kovick, sophmore Drew Gibson, senior Christian Gaytan and junior Marcos Valerio finishing 5th in the 4x800-meter relay, improving their season’s best time by six seconds to 8:23.82.
In the sprint medley relay, freshmen Seth White and Marcos Molina, sophomore Isaac Ruiz and Valerio improved their season best by three seconds, finishing eighth, while Molina also took 13th in the 100-meter dash.
“It seems like every year I say we have a young team but the juniors and seniors led the way competing very well at State,” Head coach Dan Hansen said. The state team was made up of five freshman, three sophomores, four juniors and six seniors.
While the seniors will surely be missed, the large contingent of underclassman on this years team bodes well for the future of Green River track.
“I am excited for the future for our track and field team,” Hansen said.
