Wolves take regional title

A tough weekend of competition, ending with a nail-biting conclusion against the Rock Springs Tigers, saw the Wolves take the regional championship Saturday evening.

The Wolves earned the first seed at the tournament, giving them a bye Thursday and a chance to watch Jackson and Natrona duke it out for the opportunity to play them Friday. Natrona earned that shot and took on the Wolves Friday evening, falling short to Green River’s squad 1-0.

For Green River’s rivals from Rock Springs, the Tigers won a Thursday match-up against Evanston 1-0 and ended Kelly Walsh’s championship dreams in a 2-0 victory Friday, setting up a showdown with the Wolves with the regional crown on the line.

The two teams battled through a scoreless game, pushing the conflict into overtime. Both sides refused to waver throughout the extra playtime, ending at a 0-0 stalemate at the end of the 20-minute period.

The two teams faced off in a shootout to determine the victor. The Wolves would emerge dominant, ending the shootout 5-3.

“It was a lot of fun,” head coach Chris Bieber said.

Bieber prefers the closer matches, saying soccer games are not as fun to watch if one team completely dominates the match.

Monday evening, people driving by Wolves Stadium could see the boys soccer team running laps around the field.

Bieber’s main goal going into the State tournament in Jackson is to make sure the Wolves remain in shape for the competition. Bieber said he wants the team to make it through a full match and not worry about how winded his players are.

He wants to make sure the Wolves don’t peak too early on the field.

Bieber said he’s looking forward to seeing the Wolves compete in Jackson. He said the team has had an outstanding season and hopes they will earn a state championship at the end of the tournament.

“We want to finish the season with a bang,” he said.

The Wolves, who earned first seed in the 4A West division, will face off against 4A East fourth seed Cheyenne East Friday at 4 p.m.
