Varsity grapplers take 9th at Ron Thon tourney

The Green River High School grapplers traveled to Riverton to compete in the annual Ron Thon Memorial Tournament.

The Wolves took ninth in the varsity tournament and 16th in JV competition, and learned a few lessons throughout the tournament.

Head wrestling coach Josh Wisniewski, the team learned they need to put in the work needed to accomplish their goals and work on what they need to fix during practice. However, a few competitors did stand out. Wisniewski said Kade Knezovich had a great weekend battling his way to a fourth-place finish.

“He beat a tough kid from Star Valley to advance to the semis,” the head coach said about Knezovich.

He said Clayson Mele and Kade Flores also competed hard during the weekend, and that Payton Tucker continues to wrestle well.

“It was nice to see (Tucker) bring home a belt,” Wisniewski said. “I think the work these wrestlers are putting in is paying off.”

The team will have a nice respite from their grueling travel schedule Wednesday when they take on Evanston High School in front of a home crowd.

Wisniewski said the team got back to work Monday in preparation for the Red Devils’ visit.

“We have a solid Evanston team coming in and we want to beat them,” he said.
