Times cut at Utah meet

The Green River High School Girls and Boys Indoor Track team again headed south this past week to compete in Kerns, Utah, and Utah Valley State University for the two day Utah High School Track Coaches Association Indoor Invitational.

The Wolves competed with 28 other girls teams and 33 other boys teams, with as many as 376 competitors in a single event.

Wyoming schools competing besides Green River included Rock Springs, Evanston, Star Valley, Riverton and Cody, which gave the Wolves a good preview of some of the competition they will face this spring.

For a number of the Green River competitors, this was their first meet of the season and for the few that competed last week at the Weber State Invitational, most improved their times or distances.

In the girls 400-meter race, Green River’s lone runner, Mckenzi Davison, finished in 26th place out of a field of 106 runners, improving her time from last week’s meet by almost four seconds.

In the first outing for the Lady Wolves in the 1,600-meter run, the girls had four runners led by Carly Kettering in 122nd at 5:56.70; followed by Kaisa Arnell, 149th in 6:04.78; Skylee Gomez, 247th in 7:10.24; and Kelby Pope, 262th, in 7:32.30 out of a field of 275 runners.

In the girls long jump, Lauren Hoyt in her first meet of the year finished 19th out of 49 jumpers with a distance of 14.09 feet. In the girls shot put, the Lady Wolves fielded six throwers led by Natasha Young, who finished sixth and improved to 33.04.50, followed by Cassidy Gomez, 26th with a throw of 27.00.25; Alaina Maiers, 27th, 26.07; Alexis Martin, 29th, at 25.01; Kim Peterson, 35th, at 23.09; and Janae Neff, 44th, at 20.09 out of of 54 throwers.

For the boys, Cole White dropped his time by more than two seconds in the 400 meters, improving to 53.16. He took 24th in the field of 122 runners. There was a huge field in the boys 1,600-meter run with 376 runners competing. The Wolves were led by Brayden Kovick, finishing 101st in 4:52.59 and followed by Christian Gaytan, 114th, in 4:54:36; Marcos Valerio, 117th, in 4:54.75; and Greg Sherwin 343 at 5:59.64.

In the long jump, Kyle Cacho led the way with a 20.04 leap, good for sixth place. Jared Shoemaker took 45th at 15.11, Bryson Greymountain placed 54th at 14.09.50, Cameron Kitchen in 56th at 14.03 and Evin Hansen took 61st at 11.04.

In the triple jump, Cacho again led the way for the Wolves as he took second, with a leap of 40:01.50.

During the boys shot put event, David Martinez led the four Wolves throwers, taking 12th in the field of 57 throwers at 39.04.50, followed by brothers Placido Mena in 30th at 34.09 and Tito Mena in 31st at 34.07 and ending with Ty Alcorn in 50th at 26.01.50.

The Lady Wolves ended up in 23rd place out of 29 school while the boys finished 10th out of 34 schools.

Head track coach Dan Hansen was pleased with the team’s performance, particularly as this was the first meet of the year for many of his competitors despite the fact that many of the Utah teams were on their third meet at the competition. Green River will have a week off before competing in their first in-state meet at Laramie Feb. 9.
