Wolves undefeated at Lyman tourney

A trio of dominant victories opened the Green River High School boys basketball season during the weekend.

The boys traveled to Lyman for early season tournament action. The boys played hard, defeating Kemmerer Friday afternoon 86-24, followed by Saturday victories against Mountain View 60-42 and Wind River High School 82-43.

“The boys played as a team, and worked extremely hard on both ends of the court,” head coach Laurie Ivie said.

Working a program around the poker term “all in,” Ivie said the boys are asked to be all in at every practice, every game, every day. Ivie said the team talked about what it means to be all in, and had the players personally define what they believe being all in means to them. They later shared their personal definitions with their teammates, coaches and parents during the Wolves’ opening ceremony at the start of the season.

The Wolves will compete in the popular Flaming Gorge Classic, which starts Thursday afternoon. They’ll have the home court advantage, taking on teams from Rawlins, Gillette’s Thunder Basin High School and Westside, Idaho, during the three-day tournament.

Ivie said her team will have to repeat what they did in Lyman to continue their early season successes.

“We’ve got to continue to work together, and give relentless effort on both O and D,” Ivie said.

Following their last game Saturday with Rawlins, the boys won’t compete until after the new year, taking part in tournament action in Cheyenne scheduled to take place Jan. 4-6.

Afterward, the team will take on Cheyenne South Jan. 12 at GRHS.

The Cheyenne tournament will be the last tournament the Wolves participate in until Regionals in Jackson March 1-3.
