Wyo. Game and Fish plans grizzly bear talks

Green River residents will have a chance to talk with representatives from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department Nov. 29 about what they would like to learn and know about grizzly bears.

The meeting will be part of a state-wide effort from the department to help people interested in the bears speak with wildlife managers. Last year, the new management plan for grizzly bears was adopted by the WGFD and the species was delisted from the Endangered Species Act, removing protections originally in place for the bears. The meetings will also give people a chance to comment on components of the grizzly bear management plan.

“We are excited to have conversations with the public and hear what they want to know and learn about their grizzly bears. We want these gatherings to be productive information sharing and listening sessions about an iconic animal that most everyone in Wyoming and beyond is interested in,” Dan Thompson, large carnivore section supervisor for the WGFD said in a media release. “This is an opportunity for people to tell us what they think about grizzly bear management and to have an open discussion with Game and Fish about all the work we are doing with grizzly bears.”

Residents will have a chance to learn about aspects of grizzly bear research, education and management, as well as help shape conservation efforts in the future. Biologists from the WFGD will be on hand to discuss grizzly bear recovery and conservation, as well as an overview of the WGFD management plan and what they hope to learn from the discussions taking place across Wyoming. Thompson said while much of the outside focus has been on hunting, the WGFD hopes to talk about the overall management plan, as well as the education and outreach program, Bear Wise, within the WGFD.

“After decades of recovery efforts, we now have the opportunity to delve deeper into some of the questions the public may have as to what is happening with grizzly bears and with our management of the population,” Thompson said.

Meetings will start Nov. 8 in Casper and Laramie and conclude Dec. 4 in Lander.
