Lady Wolves volleyball continues to improve

The Green River High School Lady Wolves volleyball team saw a lot of growth during this weekend’s invite.

On Friday and Saturday the Lady Wolves attended the Casper Invite, where they had the opportunity to play six different teams. They split the invite, winning three games and losing three.

“I was very proud of the girls this weekend,” head coach Rikki Shantz said. “We had to have some younger kids step up and they did just that. We also have a strong core group of girls that really did ‘a little more’ too.”

Shantz said the team was missing two players, Madelyn Heiser and Megan Yoak and she was nervous about how the team was going to play without them, but the team stepped up and filled the void as best they could.

“We had a ton of growth happen this weekend,” Shantz said. “We are getting better defensively every match. (We’re) also getting a lot better mentally.”

The Lady Wolves continue to improve every week and Shantz is happy with what she is seeing.

“We are very focused on getting to that next level,” she said. “We have so many offensive weapons it’s just a matter of creating opportunities for those big hitters.”

On Friday they team played Riverton, Cheyenne South and Kelly Walsh. They won the game against Cheyenne South and lost the other two.

Shantz said Friday’s games were pool play games and they were used to seed teams into brackets for Saturday.

On Saturday the teams play until they lose two or get to the championship. The Lady Wolves played Lander, Sheridan and Cheyenne Central. They won against Lander and Sheridan and lost against Cheyenne Central.

“We have been very good offensively when we are in system,” Shantz said. “We play in system a lot more often than most teams because of Andri Dewey being a spectacular setter.”

The team will continue working on hitting around a big block and defense.

They will also work on playing through some of the low momentum cycles that happen in volleyball.

“At this point in the season we are still kinda focused on playing our game at its high level and less concerned about what other teams are doing,” she said. “When we are playing our game we are hard to stop.”

On Thursday the Lady Wolves will travel to Evanston, while on Friday they have a home game at 5 p.m. They will then travel to Laramie on Saturday.

“We have played Evanston once this year. We have a pretty good idea of what they’re about,” Shantz said. “We will be focused on staying on top and fighting for each point with all three matches.”

The team is excited to have the home-court advantage. During their first home game against Rock Springs, the crowd was so loud and the Lady Wolves enjoyed that kind of atmosphere.

“We hope to continue this new trend. I know it’s a big night for football, but I hope we have a lot of people make it a point to come watch these amazing athletes do what they  love,” Shantz said. “Varsity starts at 5 p.m., so there is plenty of time to come watch the game before heading to football.”
