Trail Day at FMC Park planned for Saturday

Mountain bike enthusiasts from throughout the county will have a chance to ride with guided tours of the Wilkins Peak Trail System Saturday morning at FMC Park.

The Sweetwater Mountain Biking Association, along with the Green River Chamber of Commerce, will host the annual Trail Day event starting at 8:30 a.m. and will take place throughout the morning. Rebecca Eusek, chamber director, said Trail Day is in its sixth year and continues to attract locals and visitors alike.

Last year, approximately 100 people took part in the Trail Day rides and Eusek expects more people to show up Saturday.

Trail Day is a free event and features rides for all skill levels, from those who have recently gotten into the hobby to those looking for a challenging ride. The day starts with a free pancake breakfast hosted by Brent Skorcz, president of the SMBA, with multiple rides taking place after the breakfast. Eusek said the event is generally a laid-back affair, but presents a great opportunity to be introduced to the Wilkins Peak Trail System.

The system is a collection of trails leading east from Green River from FMC Park and total more than 26 miles over 17 trails. The system has been voted Wyoming’s best single-track trail system for the past two years by visitors to Singletracks.com, a website for mountain bikers to post reviews of mountain bike trails throughout the U.S.

Eusek said the trail system is quickly becoming a place to visit for mountain bike enthusiasts. A new billboard installed in November promoting Green River and the trail system has resulted in people stopping to take advantage of the biking opportunity.

“It’s very encouraging,” Eusek said. “We could be a destination for mountain biking.”
