Committee names 2017 GRHS hall-of-fame inductees

A state championship golf team, a physical education teacher and man who helped create the modern contact lens are amongst the inductees to the 2017 Green River High School Hall of Fame.

Selections for the 2017 hall of fame class were announced through a media release from Tony Beardsley, Sweetwater County School District No. 2’s athletics director.

Amongst those inducted include the 1971 state champion golf team. The team was led by All-State golfers Bruce Valencia and John Carey and coached by Larry Clause.

Dolores Albers was also selected for induction. The physical education teacher started an outdoor education program and was chosen as the Wyoming Association of Health, PE, Recreation and Dance and the American Association for Health, PE, Recreation and Dance Teacher of the Year in 1995.

She also received honors as the National Secondary High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1995. She was inducted into the WAHPERD Hall of Fame in 2012 and served as the organization’s vice president and executive board president.

Dr. Jess Boyd Eskridge was also selected as a member of the hall of fame class. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946 and was offered a basketball scholarship to the University of Wyoming. He earned a bachelor’s degree in optometry from the University of California-Berkley in 1953 and completed his Ph.D in physiological optics at Ohio State University in in 1964.

He spent the next 36 years of his career as a faculty member at several universities, including University of Houston, Ohio State University and the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

He was a member of the committee that developed the first Optometry College Admissions Test and helped create the modern contact lens.

He was named professor emeritus at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where an endowed scholarship bearing his name was also established.

The list also includes 1991 GRHS graduate Alyn Beck, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer who was killed in an attack at a Las Vegas pizza parlor in 2014.

The hall of fame weekend is scheduled to take place Sept. 7-9.

The weekend kicks off with a hall of fame social at the Hampton Inn in Green River Sept. 7.

The inductees will be honored during halftime at the Green River vs. Riverton football game at Wolves Stadium Sept. 8, which is followed by a hall of fame banquet at Green River High School Sept. 9.
