Wolves face Laramie Plainsmen at state Thurs.

A dominating 2-0 win over Jackson at the start of the 4A West Regional Soccer Tournament in Casper secured the Wolves a spot at the state tournament this week and puts them on a collision course with the Laramie Plainsmen.

Their game with Jackson last week was an important match for the Wolves, as defeat meant an end to their season. Goals by Haden Counts and Gregory Marchal, along with a strong defensive game punched the Wolves’ ticket to Sheridan. Their second game of the tournament, against Kelly Walsh, ended with a 2-0 shutout loss against the Trojans and sent the Wolves into a consolation bracket match against Natrona County.

Bieber said the game with Natrona was close. The Wolves were down 2-1 until the 1:30 of regulation time when the Wolves were able to make a second score.

Overtime ended in a tie as well, forcing the Wolves into a shootout they won 4-2.

Practices leading up to their Thursday contest continue to focus on the fundamentals of the game as Bieber admits the Wolves play during their loss to Kelly Walsh wasn’t as crisp as he would prefer.

Regardless, Bieber believes in his young team and their chances at state.

“As long as we work and we show up, we’ll be OK,” Bieber said.

Beiber said he’s happy with how the season has progressed for his team, though he does wish the Wolves didn’t drop two conference games in their last week of play before the regional tournament.

He said the team continues to grow and looks forward to having most of the team return to the field next year as the Wolves will lose only three players to graduation.
