Lady Wolves: forget the past and focus on state

The Green River High School Lady Wolves soccer team will need to put their poor regional performance behind them and focus on their upcoming state games.

It was almost like looking at a different team during regionals this past weekend and head coach Tracy Wyant knew it.

During the first game, the Lady Wolves had to take on their biggest rivals, the Rock Springs Lady Tigers. In the last two match ups the Lady Wolves came out on top, which left the Lady Tigers ready to settle the score.

“It’s hard to beat a team three times,” Wyant said. “We knew they were not happy.”

The Lady Tigers came out on top, 2-1.

“I will not blame heat, I will not blame fatigue,” Wyant said. “They were the better team that day.”

Wyant said the girls were getting frustrated when a referee was making bad calls against them that weren’t justified.

“It’s hard to stay in the game when you’re frustrated,” Wyant said. “That affected us more than it should have.”

Wyant said the girls need to learn that just because bad call after bad call happens, they have to let it go and keep playing.

“You got to not let that bother you,” Wyant said. “That was a factor, it’s not an excuse.”

On Saturday the Lady Wolves played Kelly Walsh and lost in a blowout 6-0.

“We did not show up to play that day,” Wyant said. “I couldn’t put my finger on it.”

The Lady Wolves struggled with steeping to the ball, struggled with keeping their marks and they gave Kelly Walsh too much space.

“We were a step behind no matter what we did,” Wyant said. “I’m not sure where the breakdown is.”

Wyant is encouraging her team to put those games behind them and focus on what’s really important -- their state games.

“We’re trying to turn a negative into a positive,” Wyant said.

The Lady Wolves know every team on the east side of the state is going to be good.

“We know it’s going to be tough,” Wyant said.

However, Wyant is happy with the team they are going to have to play first.

“(Cheyenne) Central is the best match up for us as a team,” Wyant said. “We ended up getting the team we wanted anyway.”

Wyant said she needs the Lady Wolves to play as the team she knows they are and what they are capable of doing.

“They have to fight for 80 minutes,” Wyant said.
