Community supports family through donations

A community continues to rally around the family impacted by a tragic accident.

With the deaths of two Green River residents, who were hit after a vehicle drove through their house, residents are trying to find ways to help them out.

One-year-old Stella Doak and Debra Devries died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Now, the community is trying to help the families out as much as they can. So far, two local construction companies, who haven’t been identified, have offered to fix the damage home for free. Others in the community have hosted bake sales with all of the proceeds going to the families. So far, about $7,200 has been raised through bake sales alone.

The family also has set up a fundraising page on the Website http://www.gofundme.com/supporting-stella. So far, that website has raised $18,701. An account has also been set up at Wyochem Federal Credit Union for those who want to directly donate to the family.

Keeping giving back in mind, local hair stylist Angel Pope of the 307 Salon decided to donate all of the money she makes on Wednesday’s from her haircut profits. Every Wednesday in March, Pope cuts hair as she normally would, but at the end of the day she takes the profits to the Wyochem FCU for the Doak family.

“If you buy a haircut or gift certificate, you will be giving,” Pope said. “All the proceeds are going to the Doak family.”

However, it is only on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and there is only one more Wednesday in March. Also, Pope is the only one at the salon participating in the fundraising event.

“It’s only valid through me,” Pope said.

Pope is hoping to have her schedule completely booked. She said she charges $15 per haircut and she can usually complete a haircut in 15 minutes.

“If I’m fully booked, that’s a lot of money,” Pope said.

Even though Pope hasn’t even met anyone from the family, her heart went out to them and she came up with the idea as soon as she heard about the deaths.

She said it’s a way for someone to get a haircut and make a donation at the same time.

Karlee Miller, a University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy student, was in town for spring break when her mother told her about the accident.

Miller said she had been thinking about getting her hair cut already, so she had her mother make her an appointment with Pope.

Not only did Miller get 11 inches cut off, but she is donated it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths in memory of Stella and Debra. This is the second time Miller has donated her hair.

Last year, she donated 12 inches to the same organization, which gives free wigs to cancer patients.

Miller said she wasn’t nervous about donating and it was nice to have cause to donate her hair for.

Miller said it was great to see a community come together to support a family in need and thought Pope’s idea was a unique way to raise money.

“It’s going to wind up being a big donation to a very worthy cause,” Miller said.

“I won’t have a total until I a’m done with the fundraising effort,” Pope said.

Those who would like to have their haircut on Wednesday will want to call Pope at 871-8320 or stop by the salon, which is located at 916 Upland Way.
