Alexa Molina and Faith Roby show everyone Green River is number one as the bus transporting the Green River High School cheer team returns to the high school.

Green River High School's cheerleading team returned home as state champions Thursday, winning a championship in the non-stunt division.

The team, tying with Kelly Walsh High School, scored 76 points in the event. Green River also returned with a second-place finish in the all-girl cheer division and took third in the coed cheer event. The team missed a first-place finish in all-girl cheer by 0.5 points, finishing behind Kelly Walsh. The team finished behind first-place Kelly Walsh and second-place Cheyenne South High School in coed cheer.

The Wolves' cheer coach, Tim Chilcott, said he is extremely proud of his team.

"They work really really hard," Chilcott said. "They're dedicated, great kids."

For the cheer team, they're working about 10 months out of the year. Chilcott said the performances fans see at football and basketball games represent small portions of the total routine they perform. The team learns a new formation and practices during those games, eventually getting a grasp on the full routine. They practice between two and three hours a day, up to six days a week.

Chilcott said the team will lose 17 seniors at the end of the year, saying the group of students helped inspire and lead the team to its championship.

For now, Chilcott said the team will prepare for its upcoming team banquet and plans to host tryouts in late May. Those making the cut will practice during the summer months at cheer camps and other events.

"I'm proud of them. They did everything we asked them to," Chilcott said.
