Lady Wolves struggle with free throws

It was a rough weekend for the Green River Lady Wolves basketball team.

The Lady Wolves took on Natrona County and Kelly Walsh in Green River, but lost both games, taking them to, 2-3, in conference games.

"We did struggle this weekend," head coach Rick Carroll said. "It was a rough weekend for the Green River Wolves."

The team kicked off the week with a game against Lyman last Tuesday. The non conference game was problematic against the No.1 3A Division West team.

"I think right now we are just struggling offensively," Carroll said. "We didn't shoot the ball well."

The Lyman team beat the Lady Wolves, 50-47.

Leading the team for the Lady Wolves in the Lyman game was Madelyn Heiser with 17 points and three assists, followed by Ashelynn Birch with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three assists and Taylor Stoeger with eight points, three assists and four steals.

Unfortunately, the struggling continued for the Lady Wolves all weekend long. On Friday night, the Lady Wolves took on Natrona County, which is currently the 4A West Division leader with an 5-1 conference record.

Natrona dominated the game and came up with a win, 62-44.

"I thought we played with a lot of energy, but we didn't shoot well," Carroll said.

The big difference came at the free-throw line. Carroll said the Lady Wolves hit 18 of 32 shots at the free-throw line, which is 56 percent.

"We didn't take care of the opportunities there," Carroll said.

The missed free-throws coupled with the Lady Wolves allowing Natrona County to sink a few three-point shots is what lost them the game.

"We didn't start the game very well," Carroll said.

During the first half, Natrona County sank five three pointers. However, in the second half, the Lady Wolves defense answered back and only one three-point shot was made in the second half.

"We did close the score," Carroll said.

However, Natrona County pulled away again and the Lady Wolves just couldn't catch up.

Leading the Lady Wolves in the Natrona County game was Andri Dewey with 13 points and three steals, followed by Heiser with 11 points and three steals and Birch with 13 rebounds.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Wolves took on Kelly Walsh, and lost 58-52.

"It was back and forth the whole game," Carroll said.

Once again, the Lady Wolves suffered at the free-throw line. The Lady Wolves sunk 14-29 free-throw shots, for a shooting percentage of 48 percent.

"We really need to relax," Carroll said.

He said had those free throws went down, they would have won the game.

"I just don't think we're shooting with confidence," Carroll said.

Carroll said he knows the Lady Wolves can make those shots, they just need to relax and know they can make those shots.

"We saw good teams this weekend and we just didn't respond very well," Carroll said.

Leading the Lady Wolves in the Kelly Walsh game was Dewey with 17 points, five rebounds, followed by Heiser with 15 points, five rebounds, Stoeger with four assists, four steals, three blocked shots, Birch with eight points, 11 rebounds.

The team will prepare for Thursday's game against Evanston and Saturday's game against Jackson by working on their offensive sets and free-throw shooting.

Carroll said they just need to make the easy shots. The Lady Wolves will be on the road for the rest of season.
