GRHS team finishes 1st at tourney

In a dominate fashion, the Green River High School Speech and Debate Team came home with another first-place finish.

The team traveled to Evanston this weekend and with 205 points Green River took first place, followed by Jackson with 44 points and then Natrona County who took third.

Head coach Carina White said this tournament is one of smallest ones they participate in with nine schools attending. White said a lot of the state’s speech and debate teams either took the weekend off or attended tournaments in Colorado.

“They are growing every week individually and as a team. This season has been outstanding so far,” White said.

Last year around this time, the team was battling colds and the flu. White said she thinks the flu has already spread through the team so she hopes they are healthy for a while.

“They are troopers and everyone gets excited about traveling and competing,” White said. “We all love what we do so it is great to travel with the team and watch the kids have success.”

White was proud of the success the team had this past weekend. The team won many events and its cross examination debate team closed out finals again.

Gregory Marchal and Patrick Marchal were undefeated and the cross examination teams took first, second and third place.

The program oral interpretation took five out of six in finals. Leslie Patterson and Reina Kropf had a great tournament winning duet and getting to finals in their other events. Kropf also won humor.

This coming weekend the team will compete at the Natrona County Tournament in Casper and is one of the most important ones they will attend this season.

“Everyone in the state will be there and it will give us a lot of data for our decisions about our state squad,” White said. “We are hopeful we can do well and would love to win it. We won by one point last year.”
