Notes from Town Square: CodeRED alerts residents

Recently, the city of Green River activated the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to alert citizens of the no unnecessary travel advisory within the city limits of Green River issued by the Green River Police Department. So, what is the CodeRED Emergency Notification System and how does it work?

Emergency Communications Network, LLC pioneered high-speed emergency notification services capable of reaching citizens in minutes. ECN’s sophisticated network supports a web-based product suite that enables local government officials to communicate time-sensitive, personalized messages via voice, email and text messaging.

Green River contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed notification solution to help keep Green River residents informed of emergency conditions that may impact them and their families.

The CodeRED system also provides officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to geographically targeted areas such as street addresses or the entire city.

This type of communication system is only as good as the telephone number database that supports it.  The only way you can be called or notified is if your phone number is in the database. One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system’s database. The database was started using the numbers from the Joint Dispatch Center’s E911 database, and residents or business owners who prefer a call or text to their mobile number have the option to enter up to two different numbers and select their preferences for notification.

The city of Green River urges all individuals and businesses to log onto the Green River website, http://www.cityofgreenriver.org, and follow the link to the “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page. Those without internet access may call the Green River Fire Department at 872-0543, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to supply their information over the phone. Required information includes first and last name, physical address, city, state, zip code, and primary phone number, additional phone numbers can be entered as well.

All businesses should register as well as those individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, or who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

CodeRED gives those who choose to be included to receive emergency notifications an easy and secure method for inputting their information.

The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes.

Individuals also have the ability to opt out of the system should they choose, but once removed from the database they will need to register to receive any emergency notifications directly from the city.

Questions can be directed to the Green River Fire Department by calling 872-0543.
