Judges needed for tournament

With about 16 schools attending the Green River High School’s Speech and Debate Tournament next week, the team is looking for judges.

Head coach Carina White said anyone can volunteer to judge a speech and debate event as long as they are out of high school. Judges do not need to have previous experience to be a judge. Those who volunteer can choose from various events, including debates and interpretative events such as humor, poetry, duet and drama.

“We (will) have an informational table set up at the tournament to instruct judges on how to evaluate the round,” she said.

On Friday, Dec. 9, the tournament starts at 3:15 p.m. and will run every hour and a half. The last round will start at 7:45 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the rounds start at 8 a.m. and will once again run an hour and a half for each round. The last round on Saturday starts at 5 p.m.

“People can judge as many rounds as they like and see many different events,” she said.

White expects to have about 400 students attending this year’s tournament.

“Without the support of our parents, staff and administration at GRHS and our wonderful community it would not be possible for us to host a tournament of this size,” White said. “We offer free meals and snacks for the duration of the tournament.”

White said this is not the only tournament Green River is going to be hosting this year. She said Green River won the bid to host the state tournament in Green River, which will take place March 9-11, 2017. She said the team will once again call on residents to be judges for that tournament also.

Those who would like to volunteer can contact White through her email whitec1@swcsd2.org.
