Turkey Trot encourages physical activity

For more than 15 years, the sight of students running along Monroe Avenue has become a familiar November scene for Green River residents.

Monroe Intermediate School's Turkey Trot took place Tuesday, with five waves of MIS students taking a run around the block.

Lori Hastert, one of the organizers, said the event has taken place in Green River for the past 15 years and the school uses the event to help encourage students to remain active during the Thanksgiving break.

"Exercise more than your thumbs," Hastert told students after their run.

The run is a culmination of the school's food drive and is the start of the Fuel up to Play 60 program at the school. Hastert said the event isn't officially sponsored by the program, though the student ambassadors for the program led students in warm-up activities.

For one student, the run was unexpectedly profitable.

"I found a dollar," Kalli Andrews said, holding up her dollar bill.

A few other students said the run was difficult for them, not because of their physical activity, but due to fashion choices for the last day of school.

"I wore the wrong shoes," Aaliyah Casper, said while showing her heeled boots.

Hastert said the event couldn't be accomplished without help from the community. She said she's thankful for the Green River Police Department providing help with traffic control during the run, while also expressing gratitude with the Tronox workers' union for providing the smoothies for the students.
