Wolves tennis ends its season on a high note

The Green River High School tennis teams ended their season in Gillette during the weekend, finishing with great showings in both the boys and girls divisions.

The boys team finished third overall, with the team of Andrew Halverson and Cody Lee winning the state title in the Doubles No. 2 bracket.

Gregory and Patrick Marchal, defending state champions in doubles last year, reached the finals but fell to their opponents from Gillette.

Coach Phil Harder said the Marchals’ last match was interesting as it was between two sets of twins.

“I’ve never seen that before,” Harder said.

Five boys were named all-state at the end of the tournament, including Halverson, Lee, the Marchals and Jacob Lock.

Lock lost to eventual state champion Dawson Miessler in the second round of play, but continued on through the consolation bracket to the semifinals.

“He deserved it,” Harder said about Lock’s all-state nomination.

The girls finished ninth, in the middle of the 16-team pack.

Harder said it was a long, three-day tournament for the team, but is happy with how the season ended for the team. With a regional title under their belt, the team continues to improve each year.

The boys will lose six of the eight players on their team to graduation, while the girls team will lose three next season.

In the off season, Harder said it will be important for the team to play throughout the winter months.

“They got to start work early,” he said.

Some members of the team will take part in the spring tennis season, which is a non-competitive season to aid tennis players in keeping their skills up prior to the Fall 2017 season.
