Boys tennis wins regionals in Cheyenne

The Green River High School ‘s tennis teams came back with great seeding in the upcoming state tournament, as well as a regional title.

The boys won the regional title, edging out Cheyenne Central by one point, finishing the tournament with 45 points. The girls finished fourth place with 37 points, behind Central, Torrington and the champions Laramie.

At state in Gillette, Gillette High School will be seeking a repeat state title in the boys tennis competition, while the girls from Cheyenne Central will hope to pull off a third straight state title.

Head coach Phil Harder said he’s looking forward to seeing the Wolves in action, saying the players themselves are excited for the upcoming tournament.

One of the handicaps Harder will face is the face he won’t be allowed to coach his team during play. To prepare for their last weekend of competition,

Harder said he’s trying to help his players maintain their consistency during play, as well as deal with shifts in momentum throughout the match.

“At this point, they should know what to do,” Harder said.

While the team both performed well at regionals, Harder has also stressed to his team not to overlook the first matches they’ll have at state, saying those matchups are important and should not be overlooked.

Once tennis ends, Harder said he hosts weekly drop in games through much of the winter, with an informal spring season occurring to help get players back into shape for the Fall 2017 tennis season.

However, while his students will practice in the high school gym, nine of the 16 teams in the division have access to complete indoor tennis courts.

“We make due with what we have,” Harder said.
