Firefighters kill early morning fire Tuesday

An early morning house fire Tuesday was extinguished by the Green River Fire Department, containing it before it could cause serious damage to the home.

At about 1:20 a.m., firefighters arrived to 221 East 2nd South with two command vehicles, a pumper truck and the department’s aerial fire truck, according to Fire Chief Mike Nomis. In total 18 firefighters arrived to the scene.

Nomis said firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly, isolating it to the home’s porch and overhang above the porch.

“Most of the structure was saved,” Nomis said.

Shortly after they arrived, the fire was extinguished and after about 90 minutes at the home, firefighters were cleared and left scene.

Nomis said the fire started when cigarettes being put out in a stack of potters ignited soft fertilizer mulch in the pots. The fire then spread from the pots.

According to the Green River Police Department, no injuries were reported during the incident.
