Children from all over enjoy the fair

Last week, was a flurry of activity for Sweetwater County children who attended Wyoming's Big Show.

Children had so many things to choose from, most were pretty tired by the end of the day. They could walk through the 4-H barns, looks at exhibits and booths, have their face painted or get a temporary tattoo, plays game or watch various performers.

They could also ride a variety of rides or play games at the carnival.

A popular informational booth at the fair was by the Wyoming Department of Transportation. As part of their highway safety program and safe kids program, children were encouraged to get on an accident simulator called "the convincer." This was a good name for the short ride since its purpose was to convince its riders to wear a seatbelt.

Children would strap into the seat and then plunge forward to simulate a small car crash. At the point of impact, an airbag would deploy. Some kids laughed after; and others looked scared.

Kelton Lamb of McKinnon wasn't even too sure he wanted to get on the simulator. Even after he did, he kept asking questions about whether or not he was going to get hurt or if the seatbelt was going to break.

After being reassured that the simulator wasn't going to do either of those things, he gave it a try. He looked a little scared, but then he laughed.

Another popular area for children was the petting zoo. At this place, children could buy oats to feed the goats, which acted like they never get to eat even though kids were feeding them all day long. They also had a chance to pet all kinds of animals including many different cows, goats, sheep and a donkey. Some children even rode a horse.

Of course one of the most popular things for kids and adults alike to do was eat fair food. For most, this was their only chance to get their favorite foods. including funnel cakes, cotton candy, flavored popcorn, corn on the corn, corn dogs, gyros, navajo tacos, all sorts of meats on a stick, homemade pop and fried potato curls.

With all of these things and more to see at the fair, it's no surprise kids were dragging their feet as they made their way back to the parking lot.
