Green River Knights compete in Douglas

The Knights American Legion baseball team traveled to Douglas, Thursday for five games in three days, culminating in a third place finish in the Bolin Memorial Tournament.

In their first game Thursday the knights defeated the locals as they downed Douglas 7-3. Alex Hietzman, Brendan Hopkins, Andrew Munoz and Trevor Zumwalt led the way for the Knights on offense as they combined for nine hits and accounted for four runs. Hietzman and Hopkins had three hits each, Zumwalt had two and Munoz had a hit and two walks, with Hopkins and Munoz both getting two RBI’s.

Ian Ebert had an excellent outing on the mound as he got the win allowing only one run in six innings giving up just three hits, while walking two and striking out seven.

In the second game of a double header, Douglas came back in extra innings to defeat the Knights by one run 8-7. The game had a number of lead changes with Douglas taking the final lead in the eighth inning to secure the victory.

The Knights started the scoring with Tyler Vendetti singling to start a three run rally. Vendetti stole a base and scored the first run of the game when Trevor Zumwalt singled to bring him home. The Knights then scored two more runs as Mcaden Mikesel singled to drive in Zumwalt and Andrew Munoz. The Nights scored a single run in the third when Alex Hietzman grounded out scoring Blake Gelinas and then scored another run in the fifth. In the bottom of the eighth inning Douglas scored one run off Blake Gelinas for the victory.

On Friday the Knights lost a close game to the eventual 2nd place team in the Tournament the Riverton Raiders who defeated the Knights 4-2.

The Knights finished the weekend with two strong performances in a non-conference double header defeating the Wheatland Lobos 9-2 in the first game and coming back with an even more impressive effort, shutting out Wheatland 8-0 with some excellent pitching and hitting.

The Knights hit the road again this week traveling to Cheyenne Wednesday for a double header with the Cheyenne Hawks and then play the Hawks in a third game Thursday before returning to the friendly confines of Stratton Meyers field to host the Wheatland Lobos in a double header on Friday and finishing the regular season with another home game on Monday 7/18 with Price Utah prior to the South District Tournament in Wheatland 7/21- 7/24.

The Knights with their third place finish in Douglas and an overall 3-2 record for the weekend are now a very respectable 28-13 overall.
