Small traveling circus entertains GR crowd

Circus music flowed from the Green River Recreation Center's gym Saturday afternoon as residents watched performances put on by members of the Candy Land Circus.

Prior to the show, Green River children couldn't seem to get enough of the pink cotton candy, popcorn and nachos sold at the concession area.

Children who were not busy purchasing light sticks, were in line to have their faces painted.

The circus kicked off with one of the performers flinging a top into the air and swinging it around on a rope. He had three different sizes of tops, small, medium and large. He worked his way up to the large top.

Next, a women circus performer showed the audience how to hula hoop with 28 hula hoops.

Throughout the show, breaks were taken so circus goers could purchase peanuts, balloons on long sticks or pay to have their photo taken with a snake.

One female performer balanced a stack of flowers, a large Barbie and then a sword on her chin while she climbed up and over a ladder. Her performance was flawless.

Oscar the clown made a couple of appearances during the show. His antics were a hit with the crowd. He would communicate by blowing his whistle or making hand gestures. At the beginning of the show he had the audience compete to see which side could clap and yell the loudest. One side was all for it, but the other side didn't clap or cheer when Oscar wanted him to. Finally, the clown waved at them in disgust and walked off.

The clown returned later in the show to throw potatoes into the crowd. He encouraged people to toss it back and he would catch the potato on a fork. The audience really enjoyed this too, but a couple of the audience members overthrew the potato or didn't throw it hard enough. At this, Oscar the Clown would wave them off and either give them another try or throw the potato to someone else.

For the grand finale, Sponge Bob Square Pants came out from behind the silver curtain to greet the audience. The children went wild and screamed and cheered as he appeared. Children could pay to have their photos with him after the show.
