Library hosts reading program

On your Mark, Get Set, Read! Summer is here and we are ready at the Sweetwater County Library to beat the summer slide. The Summer Reading Program is designed to keep kids reading throughout the summer and to help avoid the summer slide, which is the loss of academic knowledge over the summer break. Along with tracking their reading, the libraries also have educational and fun programs throughout the summer.

Youth finishing fourth grade and younger are invited to sign-up for the Youth Summer Reading Program at all the Sweetwater County Library locations. Sign-up is in full swing. As children read, they record their minutes and are entered into our prize basket drawing and receive instant prizes when they turn in reading logs. Each location has 4 amazing baskets. Drawings will be held throughout the summer at the library’s summer learning events. Minutes are earned by reading to yourself, being read to by someone else, or listening to an audio book recording.

As a special treat each library has one extra special prize basket. Youth can win the I Heart Sugar Basket by attending Summer Learning events. Join us throughout the summer for all the great events.

The library will also host a variety of events held in the Green River parks and at the library. Help us kick off the Summer Reading Program June 8, 11 a.m. at Centennial Park in Green River with the Scales and Tails show. Come see all things creepy and crawly at this amazing reptile show. The show will feature a giant lizard, giant snake, giant tortoise and a baby alligator or crocodile.

As part of the Summer Run Series hosted by the Green River Recreation Center we are sharing a StoryWalk. Walk or run and read a favorite children’s picture book. After the StoryWalk, sign-up for the Summer Reading Program and collect some I Love Reading swag. Check-in at 6 p.m., run begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center, June 13.

Similar to the Youth Summer Reading Program, young adults – those in fifth through 12th grades – will complete reading logs for the chance to win prize baskets. The more they read, the more entries they will receive into the prize basket drawings.

The libraries also offer a summer reading program for adults. For every five books read throughout the summer adults will receive one entry into a drawing for $50 in Chamber Bucks. There are two $50 prizes at each of the main libraries.

The Summer Reading Programs are sponsored by the Sweetwater County Library System and the Sweetwater County Library Foundation. For more information about library programs and services, drop by any Sweetwater County Library System location, visit the library system online at sweetwaterlibraries.com or follow the libraries on Facebook at facebook.com/sweetlibraries.
