Community Fines Art Center fundraising event tickets available

The Community Fine Arts Center is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Tickets are available for a dinner and auction fundraiser, which will take place May 14 at the Civic Center.

Starting at 6 p.m., the evening will include appetizers and dinner catered by the Sands, live music by local musicians, and an art auction.

Proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing a sculpture to commemorate the anniversary. The Sweetwater County Library Foundation with the CFAC Advisory Board are working together in this effort.

Donations of original art are also being requested for the auction.

The CFAC is a unique collaboration of the city of Rock Springs, the Sweetwater County School District No. 1, and is a department of the Sweetwater County Library System. Due to this cooperation, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a variety of cultural activities such as performances, concerts and the permanent art collection owned by the school district. In addition, changing displays of fine art as well as classes and workshops taught by both local and regional artists are regularly offered to the community.

The center opened its doors in 1966 by a local science teacher with a great love for art and a vision for his school and community. Its beginning started much earlier - 1939 - when the first painting was purchased to hang in the local high school. Inspired by Mr. Elmer Halseth, students collected nickels and dimes from school carnivals, bake sales and donation jars during the school year which was used to purchase the artwork. This permanent collection of more than 500 original American paintings, prints, works on paper, photographs and three-dimensional work which is now on display for the public to also enjoy.

To purchase tickets to the dinner or make a donation of art for the auction, visit the CFAC at 400 C St in Rock Springs or call 307-362-6212. Tickets are also available at the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce.
