Girls are going to state

The Lady Wolves are going to Casper.

The girls basketball team earned a spot in the state basketball tournament over the weekend after defeating Kelly Walsh at the regional tournament. The girls defeated Kelly Walsh 51-43 at the start of the tournament, but fell to Natrona 75-21 Friday and Evanston, 53-26 Saturday.

"I thought they just kept their focus in the game with Kelly Walsh," head coach Rick Carroll, said.

The girls led throughout their match with the Trojans. Carroll said there were some defensive failures with the Lady Wolves, but the team was able to fight back and maintain a lead throughout most of the game.

Their victory against the Trojans was the only thing they needed to earn a spot at the state tournament. The Lady Wolves are the fourth seed for the 4A West.

However, the girls have a mountain to ascend in the form of the Gillette Lady Camels, if they want to keep their state dreams alive. The Lady Camels earned first seed for the 4A East. The two will clash at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Casper College.

The winner of that game will go on to face the winner of the game between Rock Springs and Cheyenne East Friday at 6 p.m. at the Casper Events Center.

The losers in those two games will face each other at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the events center.

Carroll said Gillette has a number of great shooters and expects to see a full-court press from the Lady Camels. He also said the Lady Camels often switch into man-to-man coverage and zone press defenses as well.

"That's just how they do things," Carroll said.

Despite the challenge awaiting them in Casper, Carroll said the team is excited for the opportunity to play at the state tournament.

The last time the Lady Wolves attended the tournament was in 2013.
