Get creative at library workshops

Everyone is creative in their own way. Some people like to paint. Some people like to write. Some people like crafts. That’s the great thing about the library, you can find materials on all of your interests. We have books on painting, writing, crafting and a whole variety of other creative activities.

Not only do we have materials on these activities, we also host events where you can learn something new. You can discover a new hobby, learn a new artistic technique, and make something. We have an event like this coming up this month.

The Sweetwater County Library’s March Mini Workshops start March 12. Drop by the library any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

We’ll have interactive stations throughout the library you can visit to make something or learn something new.

The March Mini Workshops are an annual tradition at the library and it’s definitely a favorite. We have had stations focusing on everything from genealogy to planting seeds and starts.

This year, we have a fun lineup with many activities we haven’t had previously. Here’s a look at what we’ll have:

Dance Instruction - Learn the basics of ballroom dancing with an instructor from WWCC. Lessons will be given periodically throughout the day.

Sachets - Make sachets with Mary Connelly from Earthwise Herbal. Sachets are small perfumed bags designed to scent clothes and linens.

Make Butter - Learn how to make butter with representatives from the Sweetwater County Historical Museum.

Decorate Cupcakes - Make regular cupcakes look like rainbow fish, polar bear paw prints, or cowboy hats.

Altered Books -Turn old books into something new.

Yarn Crafts - Visit with the youth services staff for a creative project made out of yarn.

Zentangle Coloring - Sit down, relax and color a zentangle bookmark.

Nerd Station - Make buttons and learn about the library’s upcoming comic convention.

And, of course, you can also wander through the stacks and pick out a book to read or to discover a new hobby. We hope to see you there.

Cowboy Carnegies Exhibit

Starting at the end of the 19th century, Andrew Carnegie, one of the wealthiest men in the nation, funded the construction of many libraries across the United States. In the state of Wyoming, 16 Carnegie Libraries were built, including two in Sweetwater County – one in Green River and one in Rock Springs.

Green River’s Carnegie Library is still standing, but is no longer in use.

While it has gone through many renovations over the years, Rock Springs’ Carnegie Library is not only still standing it’s also one of only five Carnegie Libraries still in use as a library in Wyoming.

To celebrate the history of Carnegie Libraries and to promote their preservation, the Alliance for Historic Wyoming has put together the Cowboy Carnegies campaign which includes a traveling exhibit. The exhibit will be on display at Rock Springs Library from March 7 to April 5 and will conclude with a public program on the history of Carnegie Libraries in Wyoming at 6:30 p.m. April 5.

We’re excited to have this exhibit here in Sweetwater County, so make sure to stop by the library at 400 C Street and see what it’s all about.
