Girls lose close game to RS

Lose 55-38

The Green River High School Lady Wolves Basketball Team lost a back-and-forth battle with their rivals from Rock Springs Thursday night.

While the final score of 55-38 reflects a 17-point lead, the girls kept up with Rock Springs throughout much of the game, with the two teams exchanging the lead multiple times during the game. Rock Springs would maintain a small lead throughout much of the game, but wouldn't be able to pull away from the Lady Wolves until the final minutes.

"I thought we had some let down defense in that fourth quarter," head coach Rick Carroll said.

Carroll believes that softened defense at the end, in conjunction with low shooting percentages from the free throw and field goal attempts, caused the girls to see a deeper point deficit during the final few minutes.

Prior to the fourth quarter, the defensive game held its own against Rock Springs, with the team leading Rock Springs in rebounds and equalling the Lady Tigers in turnovers. At the end of the half, Rock Springs only led by three points, going to the locker room with a 25-22 lead. The end of the third quarter would be the same for Rock Springs, leading only by four heading into the fourth quarter 37-33.

The Lady Wolves travel to Star Valley for a non-conference game Wednesday evening before returning home to face the Natrona County schools at home Friday and Saturday. Carroll admits that playing a non-conference game in the middle of the week is somewhat unusual, but said it was the only time the two teams could get scheduled. He also looks forward to seeing how the girls have improved against Star Valley from their earlier meeting in Green River.

Friday night will also be senior recognition night for both the girls and boys basketball teams. The Lady Wolves are scheduled to take the court at 6 p.m. Friday night against Natrona County and 1 p.m. Saturday against Kelly Walsh.

Averee Cobb was also recognized by the Sweetwater Officials Association for her sportsmanship on the court during the basketball season. The recognition comes with a $300 scholarship. Carroll said Cobb has played hard in every game she's participated in while treating her opponents well.

"She plays the game the way you should play it," Carroll said.
